In addition to well-kept slopes there is another special treat: the duty-free shops. Over 100 years ago, an old path for oxcarts laid the cornerstone for today’s shopping paradise.

The approach to Samnaun is not really easy. The narrow road turns sharply to the right after the bridge of Kajetan and then winds through tunnels and roofings up to the high Samnaun. How arduous was the path from Spiss to Pfund in ancient times with the oxcarts? However, for a long time the trade with the Tyrolean neighbours was the lifeline of Samnaun, but it was abruptly stopped in 1848 with the Swiss customs union.

In 1892 the Swiss Federal Council declared the region as duty-free, because the Swiss side had no access. 20 years later a road link was opened, but this didn’t change the duty-free status. Therefore, many pretty hotels attract with their appealing shopping arcades.

The “twinliner” of Samnaun is the first double-decker cable railway. In only six minutes up to 180 people are carried on two levels from 1,778 to 2,500 metres. In this way, 1,620 people can be transported per hour, so that the passenger cableway ranks among the largest ones in the world. At one go it goes up on the broad and sunny high plateau of the alp Trida and then further to the Idjoch, the Oderjoch or to the Mount Greitspitze and so to the border to Austria.

The continuation of the journey to the Mount Palinkopf is worthwhile, because there begins the direct descent back to Samnaun, with 740 metres difference in altitude.

Snowboarders– whether beginners or experts – get their money’s worth: Several ski runs are marked, but not milled. This means that there are many outlying slopes, for example the easier slopes on the alp Bella or some racier downhill in the Höllenkar and from the Mount Palinkopf towards Ischgl. In addition, there are two snow parks on the alp Trida Eck and above the alp Id on the Austrian side.
