In Adelboden, in the Engstlingen Valley and in the neighbouring village Lenk in the Simmen Valley, there is the largest ski resort in the Bernese Oberland. It's fun to stroll trough the villages because Lenk and especially Adelboden have preserved their rural character.

Tradition is really important there. In Adelbogen the first hotel "Wildstrubel" was built already in 1878, in 1901 the first winter season with English guests was officially opened. Two years later the first Swiss ski race took place in Adelbogen. In 1955 the spa director at that time, Fred Rubi, wrote out an international slalom, entitled "Grand Prix of Adelbogen". Winner was Martin Julen from Zermatt.

That was the start of the World Cup races in Adelboden. Today, the World Cup giant slalom for men on the Mount Chuenisbärgli is among the classics. Centre is the small village Geils (1707 m). From there, modern chair lifts and cableways bring up the guests to Luergli (2138 m), Hahnenmoos (1957 m) or other peaks.

Great attraction: the high-speed chair lift on the 2,200-metres-high Mount Laveygrad. The wide slopes from the Mount Metschstand (2098 m) towards Lenk pledge much skiing pleasure.

An Insider tip for proficient skiers are excursion into the small, separate areas on Elsigenalp and Engstligenalp. Worthwhile is also a skiing day on the Mount Tschenten (1950 m) – “Adelbergs’ very own mountain”, as well as on the Mount Betelberg above Lenk.

On the Chuenisbärgli the ancient draglift was finally replaced by a modern chair lift with protection covers. This was a precondition of the FIS for the continuation of the World Cup races, which take place every year in January.
