A village full of contrasts: on the one hand cosmopolitan and sophisticated, on the other hand rustic and familial; in the summer a grass-green Mecca for golfers, in the winter a snow-white centre for skiers, with a hot icy disco on a frozen lake; embedded in a landscape – sometimes burnt by the sun, sometimes overwhelmed with snow.

The contrasting pair Crans-sur-Sierre and Montana, as well as its smaller and in part younger districts Aminona and Anzère, are linked with each other primarily by their marvellous layer on a plain, with forests and meadows, around 1000 metres above the Rhône Valley. The plateau is situated on the southern flank of the Bernese Alps and perhaps it is the region with the purest air throughout Switzerland.

But it is certainly sure, that it is a first-class viewing balcony over the peaks of the Welsh Alps and the Mont Blanc, from the Matterhorn to the highest peaks of the Alps.

Until 1911, the still rare holiday guests reached pure mountain air and the fantastic panorama only on foot or on a mule – although some years earlier a British Lord had inaugurated a golf course, which is today one of the highest and most beautiful ones all over the world. The region owes not only its role as international centre for golfers to the British development assistance, but also its position among the leading winter sports resorts.

When the funicular railway from Sierre to Crans Montana was opened, namely Sir Henri Lunns’ son organized the “Earl Robert of Kandahar Challenge Cup” – the first real downhill race in the history of alpine skiing. This innovative trend has been retained till this day: with a rich offer for snowboarders, large cross-country ski-tracks, ample hiking trails, helicopter flights and hot air balloon rides.
