The differences couldn’t be bigger: once withdraw cloistral village – today modern winter sports centre. Engelberg is located in the centre of the Swiss High Alps and surrounded by majestic mountains.

The imposing Mount Titlis is the principal magnet of the ski resort. One can well imagine that monks beard a charmed life in the former cloistral village, surrounded by several 3,000-metre peaks with densely wooded hillsides.

The monastery was founded in 1120 by the Benedictine order. Life was very calm there and the cloistral buildings are still inhabited. In addition to the historical centre of town, today even big hotel grounds form the view of the village, because Engelberg is an internationally renowned winter sports centre with two skiing areas. Above all the glacial area on the Mount Titlis accounts for the success of the region and keeps ready many sporting challenges.

Northwards in the valley, on the alps of Brunni, there are rather easy slopes; in the south there is an extensive skiing area around the Mount Titlis, which is achievable by the revolving aerial railway Rotair. Less trained skiers should only go about the first part on the glacier, because the second one is suitable only for experts.

For pros, there are striking ski runs through impressive, but highly cliffy glaciers. Several local ski schools offer guided deep snow tours. Especially the slope Laub with a 45-degree sloped hillside is the ultimate kick for experts. The beautiful skiing area between Stand, Trübsee and Jochstock is considerably easier and beginners find suitable ski runs also near the Engstlenalp and the Gerschialp.
